Theme tours

  • Capitol Art and Artists
    90 minutes
    See the grand murals, sculptures, and lavish decorations and learn about the elaborate conservation work performed to bring the art back to its original appearance. Hear stories about the artists, learn about the muralist movement in America, and see how the art, architecture, and overall decorative plan harmonize to make the capitol one of the premier public buildings in the United States.
  • Capitol Civil War Tour
    90 minutes
    See famous art of Minnesota regiments depicted in battle, original battle flags, and the plaques and statues added over the years to remember Minnesota's role in the Civil War. Learn about the governors who, as young men, participated in some of the pivotal events of the war, and see a battle flagstaff that survived the Battle of Gettysburg.
  • Capitol Builders Tour
    90 minutes
    Explore locations throughout the building that show the work and methods that went into creating the capitol when it was built in 1905, then explore restoration work that was completed in 2017.
  • Voice of the People: Your Role in Government
    3 hours; Offered during the 2025 legislative session
    A unique opportunity for adult groups to observe the legislative process, learn about current legislative issues, and gain a perspective on Minnesota's political history. Take an in-depth look at citizen participation in government that includes observing a legislative committee hearing and visits to chambers and rooms where laws are made.
